You are probably here because you are looking for a side hobby and you are kind of wondering whether crochet is the right one for you. There are so many different hobbies out there to choose from, it can be overwhelming. There are many reasons for people to adopt hobbies - to keep themselves occupied, they might be looking for an escape from work, or they might just want something new to do.

Crocheting is a form of needle craft where yarn is transformed into textured fabric by using a hooked needle. Crocheting also involves a process where stitches are made by using the crochet hook to loop and pull yarn through the loop. Crochet can be done with just one hook and any type of yarn and has many different uses. It’s one of the easiest crafts to learn and is great for beginners. 

This was something that happened to me back in July 2021, most exciting! I was approached back in 2020 for a feature on a Channel 8 program (a Singapore Mandarin speaking television channel) but it didn’t exactly pan out. Fast forward to middle of 2021, I was contacted for the same program and it was confirmed that I was going to be featured in a program about the ‘Slash Generation’.

Crocheting involves creating various shapes to achieve different outcomes, 2D shapes like circles can be made into doilies or rectangles made into blankets. As for amigurumi, it often involves creating various 3D shapes, for instance spheres and cylinders instead.

My latest free pattern and isn’t she a pretty little duck? There are quite a few components here including her beak, wings, webbed feet, hat and even her flower on her hat! They all work up individually and have to be attached together so I would say there is a fair amount of assembling to do here.

Let us clear any confusion with regards to whether amigurumi is the same as crochet. If you are a crocheter and thinking of trying out amigurumi, read on to see how similar or different they are.

With the simplest amigurumi doll head pattern, I will illustrate how to pick up the following 8 crocheting techniques that are essential to making Amigurumis. They include the following:

This is an interesting topic for me to talk about because I always found it a useful tool to measure children’s developmental milestones, at least when I’m in clinic doing developmental assessments. So I decided why not try incorporating crochet into it? So let’s talk about stackable toys for children, which can range from toddlers to preschoolers.

Oooh so this is something exciting that I’ve been trying out to complement some of my amigurumis. Some of my recent collections, I have been trying to include a sort of ‘container’ to house the amigurumis.

Woo Hoo Picard is back! This series is not quite like Star Trek Voyager but it’s nice to see Jean Luc again and Data! I made this collection back when I started watching that Star Trek series and it was one of my simpler designs when I used to make everything as seamless as possible.

Now this was probably the most recent thing I made of the TNG series. There was quite a bit of trial and error but it was all in good fun. Of course I started off with the iconic saucer and initially tried single crochet rounds - ended up looking more like an octagon. Then I tried making double crochet rounds and that turned out more satisfactory.

It’s always the season of love right? Hope you liked my Peter and Jane Patterns on a bench. Decided to release my Cindy Bear pattern for free this month! She works up pretty and pretty fast too with her skirt and flower. The head and body are continuous, but the detailing does include some attachments!

To make my amigurumi sets more interactive for kids, I have been using some tiny magnets inside. I know there are some hang-ups with using magnets when kids are playing but so far my preschooler seems to be loving it.

Or maybe I should name them Peter and Jane on a bench collection :). I’m really excited about this set because I started incorporating all kinds of new techniques inside for the limbs and facial head shape. I made them in 3 separate components including the bench and yessss I did incorporate magnets as well, which I will elaborate on more in my next post.

I need pattern testers again! This time it is for Easter and it has pastel colours!. To help me with this set, I will need the whole set to be completed, which consists of 3 parts.

If you are like me and always trying to squeeze in time to crochet but you have little ones toddling around, then it can sometimes be a challenge to pick up the hook. The wonderful thing about crocheting is that it is very portable, of course this depends on the number of colours you choose to use in your final crochet projects.

I decided since I was going to release this Lion Dance Troupe just before Chinese New Year this year, just for fun I decided to come up with an ang bao design for Pocket Yarnlings!

So I was thinking about releasing one pattern for free this month and since it was the year of the Tiger, I thought why not Tigger? Besides, it also happens to be Winnie the Pooh Day!
