The Making of Starship Enterprise

In preparation for the upcoming Picard series, decided to dig out this wonderful old post on how I made the Starship Enterprise!

Saucer component

Now this was probably the most recent thing I made of the TNG series. There was quite a bit of trial and error but it was all in good fun. Of course I started off with the iconic saucer and initially tried single crochet rounds - ended up looking more like an octagon. Then I tried making double crochet rounds and that turned out more satisfactory.

Secondary hull + joining to saucer

Making the adjoining section was like making a slanted cylinder… I actually adopted this pattern from an old Game of Thrones dragon, Drogon’s neck! The Secondary hull was actually a T-shaped piece stuffed with used yarn and wires to bend it upwards into shape.

Warp Engine Nacelle

This was relatively easy, it was just a matter of making a regular cylinder with the tip being in red. I just added on light blue surface slip stitches to the sides.

Wording on Saucer

This was pretty frustrating initially for me… I tried using the yarn to string the words, turned out too fat and occupied far too much space on the saucer. Then I shrunk it down to 2 ply (instead of 4) and tried to make the words at half the size. But I could hardly see what I was sewing on. At last, I decided to just go for writing on regular cloth, cutting it up and pasting it on!

Navigational deflector

One of my many uses for my rhinestones… also the same thing I used to make Thano’s infinity stones. Then I strung light blue yarn on top and below it for good measure.

Final USS-Starship Enterprise-D

Ta-da! I was quite happy with the final piece after I put them all together. See more of its completed state in many views! What do you think? The full pattern is below->
