    Introduction to Crocheting Flat Heart Applique

    In this post, we will first be starting off with the relevant supplies and techniques you would need to crochet this small heart. Here to make this heart, we only be using 1 yarn colour. Then we will head into the pattern proper.

    As this is a beginner friendly pattern, here you will learn how to crochet a heart shape without any special stitches, just increases and decreases in single crochet.

    Supplies and Techniques for Crocheting a Flat Heart

    Here I have listed the techniques as well as the materials needed to crochet a flat 2D heart.     Terminology for Crocheting Flat Heart

    Ch = chain

    Sc = single crochet

    Sl st = slip stitch 

    St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)

    2sc1 = single crochet increase (meaning 2 single crochet in same stitch) 

    Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease (referring to invisible decrease) 

    FLO = front loop only

    BLO = back loop only

    Surface sc = surface single crochet

    • holding working yarn behind piece, hook in front of piece, insert hook through piece, yo, pull yarn through piece, proceed to sc

    Materials and Tools for Crocheting Flat Heart

    3.0mm Clover crochet hook

    Scheepjes Catona or any equivalent fingering or sport weight yarn

    • Version 1 - Pink (25gm each)

    • Version 2 - Red (25gm each)

    Darning needle

    Stitch markers

    Scissors

    Now that you have gathered your supplies and had a look at the basic terminology to reading the following pattern, let us first get started!


    Stuffing

    Use leftover yarn or polyester fibrefill

    Darning Needles

    Use pink yarn to make this heart.

    Row 1: Ch2

    Row 2: Work into 2nd ch from hook, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 2st

    Row 3: 2sc2, ch1 and then - 4st

    Row 4: 2sc1, sc2, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 6st

    Row 5: 2sc1, sc4, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 8st

    Row 6: 2sc1, sc6, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 10st

    Row 7: 2sc1, sc8, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 12st

    Row 8: 2sc1, sc10, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 14st

    Row 9: 2sc1, sc12, 2sc1, ch1 and turn - 16st

    Row 10: Sc8, turn - 8st

    Row 11: Sc2tog1, sc4, sc2tog1, turn - 6st

    Row 12: Sc2tog1, sc2, sc2tog1, turn - 4st

    Row 13: Sc2tog2, turn - 2st

    Row 14: Sc2tog1 and end off - 1st

    Surface slip knot with red yarn to middle of Row 9.

    Row 10: Sc8, ch1 and turn - 8st

    Row 11: Sc2tog1, sc4, sc2tog1, turn - 6st

    Row 12: Sc2tog1, sc2, sc2tog1, turn - 4st

    Row 13: Sc2tog2, turn - 2st

    Row 14: Sc2tog1 and end off - 1st

    Continue in rounds from rows using pink yarn.

    Round 1: Sc1 in same previous stitch, place stitch marker at this start of round, sc5 at top half of heart, then sc7 down to bottom, 2sc1 right at bottom, sc7 similarly on opposite site, sc5 at top half of heart, sc6 from top to middle, sc7 from middle back to starting point again - 40st

    Round 2: Sl st 1 and end off - 1st
