Using surface slip stitch to do Amigurumi Detailing
When making miniature Amigurumi, sometimes it can be difficult to add in detailing over the body and clothes. After all, there isn’t much room to work with but you still want them to look as detailed as possible within a small surface area.
Using surface slip stitch
There’s where this surface slip stitch technique sometimes comes in useful. As you can see in the following Dobby I made, I tried to make his clothing stand out from his body. The alternative was to make a coat and cover the body with it, though this can be difficult at times for smaller amigurumi.
So this is where I’ll be talking about how to make the surface slip stitch and how I did it over Amigurumi. I have used this technique multiple times before, sometimes to make belts or coat trimmings.
Making a surface slip stitch
This is just like making a regular slip stitch but now we directly apply it on the surface of a separate piece that you have already crocheted. A surface sl st creates a flattened overlapping layer on the original Amigurumi.
Have a completed Amigurumi body piece ready. Also have another separate ball of yarn with the desired colour (whether same or different).
In step 1, insert hook into the surface of the ami and out through the adjacent stitch. Then pull yarn through both holes like in step 2.
Then in step 3, insert back into same initial 2 holes to start the first surface sl st.
Steps 4-6 involves the usual steps with making a regular slip stitch but this time it’s on another surface. Remember to draw the yarn in step 5 through loop on the hook.
If you choose to yarn over first after step 5 and then draw yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, you will end with a surface single crochet instead. That is perhaps for another time.
The completed row of surface slip stitch! You can see how it adds an additional texture to the ami.
