What is a treble crochet stitch?

A treble crochet stitch also refers to a triple crochet stitch, which is approximately 3 times the height of a single crochet stitch and taller than a double crochet stitch.

    What is treble crochet called?

The crochet abbreviation for this is TR, although I have seen variations like TC or TRC. But in general, follow the craft yarn council and use the short form TR.

    What is treble crochet UK?

Treble crochet in UK terms refers to double crochet in US terms, so along the same lines, half treble crochet in UK terms refers to half double crochet in US terms.

How to do a treble crochet?

Let us start with the steps involved first then apply them individually to every instance.

    1. Yarn over 2 times, even before inserting the hook.

    2. Insert hook into desired stitch, where you want to start the treble crochet. Then yarn over.

    3. Draw yarn through stitch, should have 4 loops on hook.

    4. Yarn over again. Draw yarn only through 2 (of 4) loops on hook, should have 3 loops left on hook.

    5. Yarn over. Then draw yarn again only through 2 (of 3) loops on hook, should have 2 loops left on hook.

    6. Yarn over for final time. Draw yarn through last 2 loops on hook, to form the final treble crochet.

How to treble crochet in a chain?

Start off with yarn over 2 times first, then insert hook into the desired chain, yarn over, draw yarn through chain, yarn over again, draw yarn through all 2 of the 4 loops, then continue onto steps 5 and 6 to finish up the rest of the loops on the hook. If you decide to do a treble crochet straight from the second chain from the hook, it might appear strange, especially if you were working from a previous sc.

Because the treble crochet stitch is so tall and if you work straight from shorter single crochet, the stitch will fold downwards and crinkle. So, this is not often done.

How to treble crochet in a row?

Usually if you decide to treble crochet in a row, it is not often done as a continuation from a single crochet stitch. With following steps 1-6 above, most crocheters would choose to either slowly increase from sc to hdc to dc and then finally to tr, or they will do a chain beforehand to lift the stitch height to the tr stitch height.

    tr crochet into row

How many do you chain for a treble crochet?

So even though technically a treble crochet is 3 times the height of a single crochet, when deciding on the chain, it should be a chain of 4 preceding a treble crochet in the same stitch. Which means that the height of a chain of 4 roughly tallies with the height of a treble crochet stitch - that's how tall it is!

tr crochet into row and chain 4

What is treble crochet in a magic circle?

Repeat steps 1-6 above but like the rest above, insert the hook into the centre of the magic circle, then proceed to treble crochet around both the ball and free ends of the yarn. The alternative which is more commonly done, is to do a magic circle and then chain 4, then proceed to treble crochet into the centre.

Learn all about the basics about magic rings here.

How to treble crochet in a round?

Similarly, to work into the subsequent rounds from the initial magic ring, either slowly work up to a tr from a sc to hdc to dc and eventually tr, or chain 4 and then proceed with treble crochet in the same first stitch of the round.

How do you treble crochet in the front loop only?

Start with yarn over 2 times, insert hook only into the front loop, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over again, draw through 2 (of 4) loops. Then yarn over, draw through 2 (of 3) loops, and then a final yarn over, and draw through the last 2 loops. A completed tr FLO stitch.

tall stitches in front loop only

How do you treble crochet in the back loop only?

Start off with yarn over 2 times, insert hook only into the back loop, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over again, draw through 2 (of 4) loops. Then yarn over, draw through 2 (of 3) loops, and then a final yarn over, and draw through the last 2 loops. A completed tr BLO stitch.

What is a triple increase in crochet?

A triple crochet is taller than a double crochet stitch and about 3 times the height of a single crochet stitch. An increase is just the same for this stitch by working one triple crochet and then repeat again in the same stitch.

    treble crochet stitch increase

Is a treble crochet the same as a triple crochet?

Another more commonly used term is treble crochet, which is the same as a triple crochet. So a triple crochet increase is the same as a treble crochet increase.

What is the abbreviation of treble crochet increase?

The abbreviation for treble crochet increase is 2tr in the next stitch. For my patterns, I use the abbreviation 2tr1 or 2 treble crochet in the same 1 stitch.

What does 2tr mean in crochet?

As mentioned above, 2tr refers to 2 treble crochet stitches in the same stitch or a 2 treble crochet increase.

How to make a treble crochet increase?

Work a treble crochet stitch first once and then repeat a 2nd treble crochet in the same stitch, to perform a treble crochet increase.

How do you increase treble crochet in the middle of a row?

To do it in the middle of the row, it would probably be commonly used as a gradually increasing stitch throughout the row like in the following pattern example:

    Chain 6.

    Row 1: Sc1, dc1, 2tr1, dc1, sc1 - 6st

So you see the row increases to reach the treble crochet height, then it increases in the middle and then reduces down in height again. This creates a mini shallow triangle too.

tr crochet stitch increase in middle of row

How do you increase a treble crochet at the end of a row?

To work a treble crochet stitch right at the start of the row would look strange and would be folded downwards because of the tall height of the stitch. So do the chain of 4 first and then work in the treble crochet stitches and then the increases as needed.

    Here are some simple examples:

    Chain 6.

    Row 1: 2tr1, tr3, 2tr1 - 7st

    Or

    Chain 6.

    Row 1: (Sc1 into 2nd chain from hook, ch4, 2tr1), tr3, 2tr1 - 7st

tr crochet stitch increase at ends of row with chain 4

How to increase treble crochet in the round?

This circle would work up the fastest because it is so tall, but there will be pretty big gaps in between each stitch. It is the same example for double crochet stitch pattern but the circle might fold in or curl inwards quite a bit. Really not commonly used and definitely not used frequently for amigurumi.

    Round 1: Magic ring tr10 - 10st

    Round 2: (Sc1, ch4, 2rt1), 2tr9, sl st to top of ch4 - 20st

    Round 3: (Ch4, tr1), 2tr1, (tr1, 2tr1) x 9, sl st to top of ch4 - 30st

    Round 4: (Ch4, tr1), tr1, 2tr1, (tr2, 2tr1) x 9, sl st to top of ch4 - 40st

The 2nd round has increases throughout, 3rd round alternate increases, 4th round increases every 2 tr stitches and so forth. Hope the pattern does not get too confusing! This was meant to be a simple example.

What is a 3 treble crochet increase?

I decided to include this in to show that 3tr refers to 3 treble crochet increase or 3 treble crochet in the same stitch.

What is the abbreviation of 3 treble crochet increase?

Some crocheters would use 3 TR as the abbreviation for 3 treble crochet increase or even the next one mentioned below, 3 TR Inc. As for me, I generally use the abbreviation 3tr1, so remember to check the crochet pattern designer’s terminology at the start of the pattern.

What does it mean 3 TR Inc?

There are some crochet pattern writers who choose the abbreviation 3tr inc, which is actually the same as 3tr, basically 3 treble crochet increase.

    crocheting treble crochet stitches

How do you do a 3 treble crochet increase?

To do a 3 treble crochet increase (3 tr inc), you will work three treble crochet stitches into the same stitch or space, effectively increasing the stitch count by two. Follow the steps for one treble crochet into the desired stitch, then repeat the same steps again another 2 more times into the same stitch.

3 tr increase in round and row

How to do a 3 treble crochet increase in a row?

When you work the 3 tr inc in a row, you are increasing the stitch count within the same row of stitches. The three treble crochet stitches are all worked into the same stitch, creating a cluster of stitches that increases the width of the row. This is useful for projects where you need to shape the width of a specific row, such as widening a garment or adding decorative elements within a row.

How to do a 3 treble crochet increase in a round?

When you work the 3 tr inc in a round, you are increasing the stitch count within a circular or spiral pattern. This is often used to expand the circumference of a project worked in the round, like hats, amigurumi, or circular shawls.

What is a treble crochet decrease?

The tallest of the crochet examples in this post and the last decrease. A treble crochet decrease involves crocheting 2 treble crochet stitches together.

What is the abbreviation of treble crochet decrease?

Here are the 2 common short forms for treble crochet decrease. Frankly I don't use this stitch often for my amigurumi patterns.

What does tr2tog mean in crochet?

Tr2tog simply refers to working 2 treble crochet stitches together or a 2 treble crochet decrease.

tr crochet decrease in a round

What does DEC tr mean in crochet?

Another uncommon way to abbreviate is dec tr, which also refers to 2 treble crochet decrease.

How do you crochet two trebles together?

The steps are a lot longer than the other stitches above:

    1. Yarn over 2 times before inserting hook.

    2. Insert hook into desired stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, should have 4 loops on hook.

    3. Yarn over and pull through 2 (of 4) loops, should have 3 loops left on hook.

    4. Repeat again, yarn over and pull through 2 (of 3) loops, should have 2 loops left on hook.

    5. Then repeat again, yarn over 2 times before inserting hook.

    6. Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, should have 5 loops on hook.

    7. Yarn over and pull through 2 (of 5) loops, should have 4 loops left on hook.

    8. Yarn over again and draw through 2 (of 4) loops, should have 3 loops left on hook.

    9. Final yarn over and draw through the last 3 loops on the hook.

    steps to decrease tr crochet

How do you decrease a treble in crochet in the middle of row?

Follow steps 1-10 above and in addition to that, remember to include the preceding chain of 4 before starting the treble crochet decrease. Working this decrease in the middle will make the rectangle piece curve, with the decreased side shorter and the other original side longer.

    See the example below:

    Chain 11.

    Row 1: Sc1 into 2nd chain from hook, (ch4, tr1), tr1, tr2tog3, tr2 - 7st

    (Alternatively, Row 1: Sc1 into 2nd chain from hook, (ch4, tr1), tr2tog in next 3st, tr2 - 7st

    Or, Row 1: Sc1 into 2nd chain from hook, (ch4, tr1), tr dec in next 3st, tr2 - 7st)

decrease treble crochet in the middle of row

How to decrease treble crochet at beginning of row?

Likewise for dc decrease at both ends, progressively doing the treble crochet decrease at the ends will eventually create a triangular appearance, albeit with taller stitches.

    Chain 11.

    Row 1: Sc1 into 2nd chain from hook, (ch4, tr2tog1), tr6, tr2tog1 - 8st

decrease treble crochet at beginning of row

How to decrease treble crochet in the round?

This is not commonly used in amigurumi but worth including for completeness. The pattern is similar to the one I included for double crochet decrease in a round but this time with treble stitches.

Here is an example of a uniform decrease in a circle:

    Round 1: Magic ring sc6 - 6st
    Round 2: (Ch4, 2tr1 in 1st st), 2tr5 - 12st
    Round 3: (Ch4, tr1 in 1st st), 2tr1, (tr1, 2tr1) x 5 - 18st
    Round 4: (Ch4, tr1 in 1st st), tr1, 2tr1, (tr2, 2tr1) x 5 - 24st
    Round 5: (Ch4, tr1 in 1st st), tr23 – 24st
    Round 6: (Ch4, tr1 in 1st st), tr1, tr2tog1, (tr2, tr2tog1) x 5 - 18st
    Round 7: (Ch4, tr1 in 1st st), tr2tog1, (tr1, tr2tog1) x 5 - 12st
    Round 8: Sc2tog6 - 6st

treble crochet decrease in a round

What is a 3 treble crochet decrease?

A 3 treble crochet decrease refers to treble crochet 3 together or decrease down to 1 stitch from 3 stitches. This is also called a 3 treble crochet decrease or treble crochet 3 together!

What is the abbreviation of 3 treble crochet decrease?

The abbreviation for 3 treble crochet decrease is much like that for a regular decrease mentioned above, here are the 2 versions below.

What does tr3tog mean in crochet?

Tr3tog refers to treble crochet 3 stitches together, so it is technically more than a simple decrease. It is also called a 3 treble crochet decrease. For my own patterns, I tend to write tr3tog1.

What is 3 tr dec in crochet?

Decrease in stitches that are more than 2 treble crochet together are not commonly written this way but I've decided to include it because there are some patterns written this way. 3 tr dec is technically the same as tr3tog.

3 tr decrease in row and round

How do you do a 3 treble crochet decrease?

To do a 3 treble crochet decrease (3 tr dec), follow these steps:

    1. Yarn over your hook twice.

    2. Insert your hook into the first stitch or space indicated in the pattern.

    3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have four loops on your hook.

    4. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook, leaving three loops on the hook.

    5. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops on your hook, leaving two loops on the hook.

    6. Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch or space as indicated in the pattern.

    7. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have five loops on your hook.

    8. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook, leaving four loops on the hook.

    9. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops on your hook, leaving three loops on the hook.

    10. Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch or space as indicated in the pattern.

    11. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have six loops on your hook.

    12. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook, leaving five loops on the hook.

    13. Yarn over and pull through the next two loops on your hook, leaving four loops on the hook.

    14. Yarn and pull through all four loops on your hook.

    15. You have completed the 3 treble crochet decrease (3 tr dec).

Always refer to the specific pattern you're using for any additional details or modifications, as the exact instructions may vary. The 3 tr dec is commonly used to decrease stitches and shape crochet projects.

How to do a 3 treble crochet decrease in a row?

Like the example for the decrease above for the tr2tog, working a bigger decrease (tr3tog) in a row can create a convex or crescent shape, even more curved than the example for the decrease above. See more below:

    Chain 10.

    Row 1: Sc9 - 9st

    Row 2: Tr3tog3 - 3st

Bigger decrease in the number of stitches, from 9 stitches to 3 stitches!

How to do a 3 treble crochet decrease in a round?

A 3 treble crochet decrease in a round narrows a sphere far quicker than just a tr2tog decrease, if done uniformly around the round. Just like the example below:

    Round 1: Magic ring sc6 - 6st

    Round 2: 2sc6 - 12st

    Round 3: (Sc1, 2sc1) x 6 - 18st

    Round 4: Tr3tog6 - 6st

Consider trying a 3 tr decrease (or tr3tog) asymmetrically in a round or continuously in the whole round to get different appearances at the end.

How do you do a treble crochet bobble stitch?

A treble crochet bobble stitch is larger than a regular double crochet bobble stitch and the steps are as follows:

    1) Yarn over 2 times, even before inserting hook into st.

    2) Insert hook into desired st, then yarn over again.

    3) Draw yarn through, should have 4 loops on hook.

    4) Yarn over again.

    5) This time, draw yarn only through 2 (of 4) loops on hook.

    6) Yarn over again and draw yarn through 2 (of 3) loops on hook.

    7) Repeat: yarn over 2 times.

    8) Insert back into same st (as point 2) and pull through.

    9) Yarn over, draw through 2 (of 5) loops. Will get 4 loops left on hook.

    10) Yarn over, draw through 2 (of 4) loops.

    11) Repeat press another 2 more times until there are 5 loops on hook.

    12) Finally yarn over for last time.

    13) Pull yarn through all 5 loops on hook.

    14) Sc1 into next main st in a round.

    15) Invert bobble stitch outwards so that it is bulging on the outside.

Finally completed 4tr bob, looking slightly like an ovoid shape.

treble crochet bobble stitch in a round

How to crochet treble crochet bobble stitch in a row?

Follow the steps above to create the treble crochet bobble stitch. When you crochet the treble crochet bobble stitch in a row, each bobble will be worked individually into consecutive stitches. The bobbles will create raised, textured bumps along the row, with each bobble being aligned in a straight line. The stitches between the bobbles will typically be regular treble crochet stitches.

How to crochet treble crochet bobble stitch in a round?

When you crochet the treble crochet bobble stitch in a round, the bobbles will be worked in a circular or spiral pattern. Each bobble will be worked into its own stitch or space, usually with chains or other stitches between them. The bobbles will cluster together to form a circular or spiral pattern, creating texture and visual interest in the round.

How do you do a treble crochet popcorn stitch?

To crochet a 3 treble crochet popcorn stitch,

    • 3tr in indicated, remove hook from loop, insert hook through 1st tr of 3-tr group, replace loop on hook, yo, draw tightly through loop and st on hook.

The treble crochet popcorn stitch creates a raised bulging-like effect in your crochet work, adding texture and visual interest.

How to crochet treble crochet popcorn stitch in a row?

When worked in a row, the treble crochet popcorn stitches will be aligned in a straight line. Each popcorn stitch will be worked individually into consecutive stitches in the row, creating raised textured bumps in a linear formation. You might want to consider regular treble crochet stitches worked between each popcorn stitch to provide spacing and to make each popcorn more prominent.

How to crochet treble crochet popcorn stitch in a round?

When worked in a round, the treble crochet popcorn stitches will be placed in a circular or spiral pattern. Each popcorn stitch will be worked individually into its own stitch or space in the round – or consider other stitches worked between each popcorn stitch. The popcorn stitches worked in a round will cluster together, creating a circular or spiral pattern. This arrangement can give a more compact and dense appearance to the popcorns.
