Crocheting Amigurumi Feet without attachment

I love adapting random crochet techniques into Amigurumi making. This time I turned a popular textured crochet technique for blankets into feet for my amis! Using this special stitch allows me to make standing amigurumis! Read on to find out more.

Out of the 9 methods I use to make my basic amigurumi bodies, this 7th method has got to be my favourite! There is also no sewing involved with this method and I used the extended bobble stitch method for his arms (3rd little guy in the picture above!). This 7th particular standing method is called:

Standing Popcorn Stitch!

So let’s dive in, we will start with the sizing of the popcorn stitch and then subsequently how to do it by incorporating it with a simple cylinder!

Size of popcorn stitch

So first and foremost, there are various sizes of the popcorn stitch. I mention this first because the popcorn stitch you decide on depends on the type of basic crochet stitch used.

For example in Pocahontas below, on the left I used a double crochet popcorn stitch but on the right is a half double crochet popcorn stitch. Not sure if you can tell the difference, but the dc pop looks too big!

Type of popcorn stitch

So for all intents and purposes, for the proportions of my mini amis, I usually use hdc pop stitch because the size of the feet fit best.

If you have not figured out how to do a basic half double crochet stitch (hdc), I would suggest this blog post.

How to do the popcorn stitch

In the following example, there is dark and light blue differentiation for easier illustration. For Rapunzel above, because she’s bare-footed, everything was made in the same beige colour.

Start by making a basic half double crochet (hdc) in steps 1-3. Repeat again another 2 more times to get 3 hdc in same initial stitch.

You can make different variations in above steps - like using dc instead of hdc, or make a wider pop st with 5 hdc in same st, etc.

Step 5 onwards is where it starts to become different. Remove the hook from the active loop and insert into the beginning of the popcorn stitch. Then pull through the dropped loop.

The completed look of the popcorn stitch is in step 7. You can make it pop forwards or backwards, in this case to make the feet I make it pop forwards. Complete with step 8.

The final foot! You can make it the same colour to look like bare feet or change the colour to make it look like a shoe instead. Just play around with the variations!

Just so you know, because I dislike sewing, I have tried other methods to make the limbs. Like using the popcorn stitch for the feet, I have similarly used the bobble stitch for the arms! Check out this blog post on how to do it!

If you would like to give Rapunzel or Pocahontas a go - go check out their individual patterns! Or wait until the end of the month for the discounted bundled set! Apart from incorporating the popcorn stitches into their feet, I utilised a lot of other various techniques to make them!

Happy amigurumi making! Let’s see those tiny little feet grow!
