5 simple ways to turn small Amigurumi into gifts this Holiday season

Ever dabbled with the idea of making an Amigurumi for a loved one or a friend this Xmas? Not only that, you would like to make something ‘useful’ for once? Here are some ideas I have come up with… and they mostly apply to smaller Amigurumi, because that’s my specialty 😅😅.

1) Earrings

Of course I mean dangling earrings, not studs. They can be made into symmetrical or asymmetrical earrings. And relatively smaller so it does not weigh down on the ear lobes. Alternatively, you could just make head components of Amigurumi but it might not turn out so detailed.

To do this, you can consider choosing simpler smaller designs or use old designs and ‘down-size’ them. That would involve using a thinner yarn (like a sport yarn cos lace yarn is too thin!) and a smaller crochet hook around size 2.0mm

These are some older ones I have made before. (Will be releasing my Disney Princess Amigurumi pattern series next year FYI 😅.) If you want to get the earring attachment, you can find it here.

2) Keychains

Guess this would qualify as using the Amigurumi as an accessory. Keychains can be used to accessorize handbags or work/ gym bags etc or even paired with car keys. Probably not with luggage though because they tend to be quite delicate. You can also make them interchangeable from time to time.

Alternatively, you could get bar pins attached over the back of the Amigurumi. Then they would be pinned onto bags rather than dangling from them or even made into brooches! If you decide to make it slightly smaller and use a dangler instead, it can be made into a handphone accessory!

If you happen to be interested, the Star Trek patterns are available. They are simple and fast to make!

3) Cake toppers

So I don’t have an actual cake to demonstrate this but this bunch came from a old Halloween post. Getting hold of the barbecue sticks are relatively easy. Then it’s a matter of inserting the stick at the bottom of the Amigurumi. It’s very popular for wedding cakes, if you intend to DIY for a friend or relative getting married. Considered all these for a Halloween cake (or pumpkin!) decoration!

4) Hanging mobile

This is great if you intend to give an expectant couple for their baby crib. Or it can double up as a living room decor as well. Especially if you DIY, then you can be sure they can’t find the same hanging mobile commercially outside! Apart from making the individual Amigurumis, stringing them all together into the final mobile is actually really easy.

All you need is an embroidery hoop, some white cotton strings, scissors and your darning needle for attachments. If you want to see how to make a hanging mobile, check out an old blog post I made about it.

The hanging mobile I made above includes all the classic avengers I made previously and pssst… right in the middle is a Quinjet I came up with. Will be having a series of posts on how I made the Quinjet later this month. As for the lower mobile, those are the newer avengers with the Hulkbuster in the middle.

5) Xmas ornaments

This is pretty appropriate for the upcoming holiday season and they can be reused again every year! All you need is a dangler to attach to the top of the Amigurumi, similar to something you would use for a handphone accessory. It can then be hung onto the Christmas tree. Definitely would make for very unique Christmas ornaments!
