My Latest Hook Nook Feature with a free pattern!

Hey guys! My latest ‘Ice Cream Babies’ set has landed on the Hook Nook blog! I was so excited to be featured there, she has so many other amazing artists there showcasing different types of crochet work!

This is my second modular set - meaning it has separate parts that can come together. My first attempt at it was my Lion Dance troupe! I made the set such that the two little babies fit snugly into the ice cream truck!

I decided to line the inside of the truck as well, they were wrapped around recycled non-slip mats, check out the behind the scenes below to see what I mean.

There is also a fair amount of detailing, I have some window trimmings, an ice cream handle at the top to open up the truck, the wheels, headlights and wipers too!

See the full toy set below in the video for the 360 degree view, I’m so excited to show you!

Behind the scenes

So the body bases for Polly and Buster are similar, with just some colour changes, I intentionally wanted both of them to be sitting because they would be more stable in the truck.

Both of them are utilizing my 4th method in my ‘Making Basic Amigurumi Bodies’ Ebook, which I named the 'chain and surface crochet’ method. Psst by the way, if you are a Pocket Yarnlings VIP subscriber, this book is massively discounted for you!

As for the ice cream truck, this part was definitely more time-consuming but the end result was well worth it! Just for a little fun, I decided to create an open window on one side of the truck and a closed one on the other side!

To firm up the inner linings of the truck, instead of using cardboard, I used some non-slip mats (those used to line drawers and carpets) because firstly I could recycle them and secondly, it was great for using the left-over scraps which were really small pieces! I actually got mine from Ikea!

Unlike the babies which had minimal attachments (there still was because of hair wig caps etc), the ice cream truck had a fair amount of assembling. Mainly the sides, base, front and back windows and the top lid!

I think all in all, it took me 2 weeks to finish, this was in between work and taking care of my active toddler, which was considered one of my longer projects but it was worth it!

I would say, my little one thinks it’s worth it, hehe, she has a lot of fun playing with it and the little babies fit nicely into her palms! She mixed it up with her own little ice cream toys too…

Did I mention, this pattern is completely free on the Hook Nook blog? For Polly and the Ice Cream Truck! There are 10 images there, I tried to squeeze in as much detail as possible but there are so many parts!

If you like to see more photographs and more detailed steps, stay tuned for the full 20-paged PDF with more than 50 photos, which I’m going to release in 2 weeks time, right here on my blog!

In the mean-time, go check out the pattern on the Hook Nook blog, there is enough material there to try it out first by yourself! Let me know guys if you love this cos I really loved making it, I want to try more of such modular ‘self-concocted’ designs in the future!
