How I made Hulkbuster from scratch
This was where I was at when I made my simple Iron Man amigurumi (I wouldn’t say 1st one, because there was a iteration before this). While I was aiming for the following image - the Hulkbuster. So I set about making this upsized Iron Man with many rounds of trial and error.
(If you happen to want to try this very simple free Iron Man crochet pattern in a previous post, no harm starting from somewhere simple!)
Various Parts of Hulkbuster
1) Head
I used back the same pattern I used for Iron man’s head and decided to tweak it. So I frogged it and remade a slimmer and more pointed head. This time I did not make it a continuous seamless stitch from the head to body. I made the head and the body into separate pieces.
2) Body
The body is essentially a big red triangle with a wider top and a smaller base. It is here where all the other parts converge - including the arms, legs, head shoulder pads and pects. Much of the detailing occurs here as well once all the attachments are sewed down.
3) Limbs
Even with the arm and leg attachments, there is quite a bit of random detailing as well. I added a plating at the sides of both arms and legs and a little thumb by doing a small surface crochet on the arms.
4) Pects and shoulder pads
The symmetrical pects were placed to puff up the chest, with the core placed just below it. A pair of shoulder pads on each side of the head to provide those broad shoulders as well.
5) Back
His backpack and some blasters. Much less complicated than the front, just 4 magic circles and a rectangular piece in the centre.
6) Detailing
The detailing is all over the body, including over the head, body and limbs. Honestly, it’s the same colours repeating. Which essentially means you only need 5 colours for this whole piece - red, yellow, grey, black and light blue! Most of my amigurumis have many colour combinations so this is already considered few.
Final Hulkbuster!
How does he look? Compared to my first Iron Man version? My husband has since hoarded it 😅😅. If you like a hand at trying this pattern, check it out here. Otherwise, go see my previous post on the free smaller Iron Man.
