Free Fred Jones Pattern from Scooby Doo!

If you are a big Scooby Doo fan, you will undoubtedly know all the characters of the Mystery Gang. Unexpectedly, my little daughter’s favourite character is Fred - leader of the gang. These set of Scooby patterns work up really fast and are very easy for beginners to try!

Terminology

Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet (2sc1 means 2 single crochet in same ch)
Sl st = slip stitch
St = stitch (refers to number of stitches in one round)
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet (yarn over 1x)
Tc = treble crochet (yarn over 2x)
Dtc = double treble crochet (yarn over 3x) 
Sc2tog1 = single crochet decrease
Bobble stitch = 4 double crochet bobble
Surface sc = single crochet directly onto surface

Materials and Tools

2.0mm Clover crochet hook
Orion Top Deluxe Yarn, Crown Yarn (or any equivalent acrylic yarn) - yellow, beige, light blue, white, orange, light brown
Darning needle 
Stitch markers 
Filling – use leftover yarn or polyester fiberfill
Scissors  
4mm glass eyes or safety eyes 

Head 

Round 1: Magic ring 10 (yellow) – 10st

Round 2: 2sc10 (yellow) – 20st

Round 3: Sc20 (yellow) – 20st

Round 4: (Sc1, 2sc1) x 10 (yellow) – 30st

Round 5: Sc12 (yellow), sc12 (beige), sc6 (yellow) – 30st

Round 6: (Sc1, sc2tog1) x 4 (yellow), (sc1, sc2tog1) x 4 (beige), (sc1, sc2tog1) x 2 (yellow) – 20st 

Round 7: Sc8 (yellow), sc8 (beige), sc4 (yellow) – 20st

Round 8: Sc2tog4 (yellow), sc2tog4 (beige), sc2tog2 (yellow) – 10st

Round 9: Sc2tog5 (beige) – 5st

Body (continue from head)

Round 10: 2sc5 (beige) – 10st

Round 11: 2sc10 (white) – 20st

Round 12: Sc10 (white), 11th arm, sc7 (white), 19th arm, sc1 (white) – 20st

Arms (at 11th and 19th position): 4dc bobble stitch, top half beige, bottom half white 

 

(Bobble stitch for arms = top half beige, bottom half white

From the 10th single crochet in Round 12, you will have 1 white loop on hook

Yarn over beige, insert hook, yarn over beige again, draw beige yarn through –> you will have 2 beige loops and 1 white loop on hook

Then draw white yarn through 2 beige loops on hook –> you will have 2 white loops on hook

Repeat process: yo beige, insert hook, yo beige and draw beige yarn through –> you will have 2 beige loops and 2 white loops on hook

Then draw white yarn through 2 beige loops on hook –> you will have 3 white loops on hook 

Repeat again: yo beige, insert hook, yo beige and draw beige yarn through –> you will have 2 beige loops and 3 white loops on hook 

Then draw white yarn through 2 beige loops on hook –> you will have 4 white loops on hook

Repeat last time: yo beige, insert hook, yo beige and draw beige yarn through –> you will have 2 beige loops and 4 white loops on hook

Then draw white yarn through 2 beige loops on hook –> you will have 5 white loops on hook 

Then pull through white yarn through all 5 white loops on hook and sc1 in next main stitch.) 

Body - continued

Round 13: Sc20 (white) – 20st

Round 14: Repeat round 13 – 20st

Round 15: Sc13 (light blue), 14th leg, sc4 (light blue), 19th leg, sc1 (light blue) – 20st

Legs (at 14th and 19th position): 4dc bobble stitch, both top and bottom light brown

(Will need to change colour from the 13th light blue single crochet in Round 15 to brown by pulling brown yarn through 2 white loops on hook, like you would normally do when changing colour.) 

Follow same method as above for the bobble stitch for arms, except this time it’s a regular 4dc bobble stitch with one colour. 

Round 16: Magic ring 10 then 2sc10, to join up to round 15 (all light blue) – 20st

Wig cap – yellow

Round 1: Magic ring 10 – 10st

Round 2: 2sc10 – 20st

Round 3: Sc20 – 20st

Round 4: Sc9, hdc1, dc5, hdc1, sc2, hdc1, dc1 – 20st

Round 5: Dc6, hdc1, sc2, hdc1, dc5, hdc1, sc2, hdc1, dc1 – 20st

Round 6: Tc5, dc1, hdc1, sc1, sl st 1 – 9st 

Attach wig cap onto the hairline of the head.  

Assembly   

  1. Attach wig cap onto hairline of head.

  2. Insert 2 glass eyes at 2nd row of the beige face. 

  3. Collar – light blue

    1. Surface sc all around neck, starting from the top front midline, extending around back of neck and back to front midline again. 

  4. Ascot – orange 

    1. Tie an orange yarn in the middle, overlapping over the light blue collar and sew it down.
