7 steps to Bending a Wire into a Mini Sword

Technically not a crochet tutorial but a craft wire tutorial! It is for accessorizing our amigurumis, which I love to do! This time, it’s about making Aragorn’ sword using some simple craft wires. I used the same method to make a trident for Aquaman and a pair of sai for Elektra, as you will see later on!

How to bend craft wires into a mini sword

1) Bend a wire against itself tightly, then bend it perpendicularly

This part is to make the crossguard or quillon, which is the bar of metal that is at right angles to the blade. We start off with one over the left side and move onto the right side below.

2) Continue into a ‘U’-shape and bend it against itself tightly again

You should end up with both ends of the crossguard adjacent to each other, with some space in the middle to make the grip and shaft of the sword.

3) Bend the stray end alongside the right half of the ‘U’-shape, leaving it pointing upwards

We are moving into making the grip of the sword, which is located in the middle and above the crossguards, as you will see later.

4) Then bend the wire back downwards tightly against itself, making this tip the tallest

This highest tip amongst the 3 is where the grip of the sword is supposed to be located, so there must be a conscious effort to extend this part longer than the crossguards. It should end off pointing downwards.

5) Extend wires downward for a longer distance and bend it upwards tightly against itself again

This constitutes the shaft of the sword and should span a longer distance than the grip (top part) of the sword, probably approximately 2 times the length. The final wire should be bending upwards to the final finishes soon.

6) Wrap the stray end of wire closely against itself and twist it as reach the top end

Keep the folded down wire as close back to the shaft as possible so that they are almost adherent. When reaching above the crossguards, start to twist it down to secure it against the original grip you made in steps 3-4.

7) Bend the stray yarn downwards again and twist the remnant wires tightly against itself

This part is to make sure there are no sharp ends pointing outwards, so the stray end is being ‘weaved back into’ the grip of the sword. Kind of like how you would when you end off your crocheting! Then secure it down and you are done! There you have it, a nice little mini sword which was quick to whip up and will go nicely with your swordsman.

You could leave it in this state like how I did for Aragorn and Elektra with her sai, or you could use some yarn to wrap around it like how I did for Aquaman’s trident. Try many different variations until you like it, like adjusting the length or width of the wire or changing the yarn to wrap around it, just use your imagination!

This round I actually made it for Aragorn, the Ranger and swordsman! He has a detachable hooded cape and coat too, which is will be coming up in my Fantasy collection so do stay tuned for it, can’t wait to see you the rest! In the meantime, do try this method to make little swords for your amigurumis!
